Protect Property Rights

Protect property rights

< HOME

In the United States, one of our most basic freedoms is the right to own private property. To protect people from government trampling on this right, our founding fathers wrote it into the U.S. Constitution – “Nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.”  The Washington Constitution is even stronger: “No private property shall be taken or damaged for public or private use without just compensation having been first made.”

Dan Roach believes it is time that governments live up to the law.  He has fought in the Legislature to protect individual property rights for Washingtonians.

Give voice to rural landowners affected by critical area ordinances
  • It was one of the biggest government land grabs in the history of King and Pierce counties – the adoption of critical area ordinances (CAOs) last fall that restrict rural landowners from using up to 65 percent of their property.  Dan Roach believes it is nothing short of stealing from the people who are the rightful owners. In response, Dan prime-sponsored several measures to provide relief.
    • House Bill 1162 sought to make CAOs subject to a citizen referendum.
    • House Bill 1163 sought to require assessment reductions of taxable property impacted by CAOs.
    • House Bill 1164 sought require that where CAOs would affect 100 or more acres, a referendum must be passed before the rules take effect.
    • House Bill 1165 sought to require government to provide compensation to landowners based on the projected loss of value due to Critical Area Ordinances.
