Fight Crime
|

< HOME |
Dan Roach believes one of government's most essential duties
is the protection and safety of its citizens. As our state
representative, Dan has made public safety and the fight
against crime one of his top priorities. He feels that the
rights of victims should be placed ahead of the rights of criminals.
Those who victimize people, especially children, senior citizens and
the most vulnerable, should be separated from their victims with a
just prison sentence where they can do no more harm.

Fighting identity theft
-
When Dan Roach discovered that identity theft was one of
the fastest growing crimes in King and Pierce counties, he teamed
up with the Washington State Patrol and held public hearings in
Bonney Lake and Auburn to hear from the victims. Dan sought
solutions that led to legislation he introduced in the 2006
Legislature to fight identity theft. Backed by Attorney General
Rob McKenna, Dan's measure,
House Bill 3067, sought to
allow consumers who fear imminent identity theft to “freeze” their
credit – prohibiting financing from being issued in their name and
restricting access to credit histories. Dan Roach
also introduced
House Bill 2840, to increase penalties on ID theft
and allow criminals convicted of the crime to have their assets
seized and forfeited.
Taking AIM against auto
theft, ID theft, meth
-
Dan Roach's ID theft legislation was included in part of a
larger anti-crime package known as AIM (A - auto
theft; I - identity theft; M - methamphetamine).
Thieves involved in auto theft and ID theft often use these crimes
to support their meth habits and operations. Dan co-sponsored
House Bill 2839 and
House Bill 2822,
each of which called for new tougher penalties against meth makers
and auto thieves.
Protecting
children from sex predators
-
After former Tacoma resident and convicted sex offender Joseph
Edward Duncan III was arrested in Idaho for the deaths of a family
and the molestation of a girl, Dan Roach moved forward to
push for a modified, tougher version of Jessica's Law. Dan's
House Bill 2918 sought to
turn the state's "Two-Strike" sex offender law into one strike so
that molesters who prey on innocent children could be immediately put away for
life. When it became apparent that his bill would not move
forward, Dan worked with leaders in the House of
Representatives to strengthen another sex predator bill that was
advancing.
House Bill 3277, signed into
law, locks up certain child sex molesters for a minimum of 25
years.
Keeping
drunken drivers off our highways
-
Dan Roach believes Washington’s DUI (driving under the influence)
laws are too lenient given the fact that no matter how many DUIs a
person receives, the offense remains a misdemeanor. He supported
House Bill 3317 which provides for
felony offenses and penalties against repeat DUI offenders.
